I love Japsloitation movies! Adapting the spirit of the Blaxploitation genre in the 70s, these movies were filled with over the top violence, nudity and at times, a funky wakka wakka score. Along with the Baby Cart series and Lady Snowblood, my favorites are the Hanzo the Razor series starring Shintaru Katsu, who plays against type from his other alter ego, Zatoichi (He'll always get props from me for trying bring his stash of pot into the US by hiding it in his drawers.) Drawn whilst watching "Whose Got the Gold."

30 Days of Doodles: #1

I've been a bit lazy (or busy depending on how you look at it...) so I'm doing a self imposed doodle marathon to get myself back in gear. These may be quite random, so I'll apologize in advanced.

Son of Rambow

Just got back from a screening of "Son of Rambow," the latest film by Hammer and Tongs. It's a lovely little film about two kids who are inspired to make their own film after seeing First Blood. It's got everything you need in life: violence, animation, flying dogs, Sylvester Stallone, violence, the French and an kickin' 80s soundtrack. There's an amazing dream sequence that is pure Hammer and Tongs. Drawings come to life, children buff up to Rambo-esque proportions. Visual wizbang aside, the movie has genuine heart, I swear, old age is turning me into a teary fool. Something emotional happens in a movie (ex. Nerds are victorious...cue "We are the Champions"...) and I start getting all choked up. For animation buffs out there, look out for a cameo by Jan Pinkava. The movie comes out the same weekend as Iron Man. See this first...

I've dreamt of seeing this commercial again for years. Thanks Youtube for making sure my childhood memories are preserved for eternity (At least until you get shut down...) As a kid, I loved those Jack Kirby-esque characters and how could you deny the beauty of a city wall made up of giant teeth! I'm truly amazed how well the actual commercial holds up to how I remembered it. I can't say the same for Voltron or the Superfriends...anyways, gotta go, I've got a hankering for a round of some vigorous teeth brushing!

Spaceman sketches set #5

This pair was the last two from this series. I plan on continuing this series, but lately life (or laziness) has been getting in the way. When I sketched in the Dog painting, the air tube originally filled the entire composition, twisting and curving around ornately.



As I started painting the piece, I realized that I had no focus and simplifiedI it so the dog would retain the focus. As for the Astronaut in the cockpit, I just wanted to do a piece that could tell whatever story that popped in the viewer's head. Is he crashing...taking off...does he really need to pee?
